Driving in Kansas During Spring Storm Season

Kansas is one of the several midwestern states that are in the great plains. The great plains are subject to huge thunderstorms and high-speed wind gusts as storms. These storms travel across the Rocky Mountains into the plains of Kansas. We concentrate on helping personal injury victims in truck accidents while driving in Kansas during the Spring Storm season of the Midwest.

Dangerous Spring weather brings risks for driving in Kansas

  • Severe Thunderstorms
  • Surprise Rain Showers
  • Heavy Winds & Gusting Winds
  • Tornadoes
  • Hail Storms
  • Sleet
  • Snow
  • Fog

Semis and other commercial trucks are constantly driving in bad storms and high winds contrary to Federal laws and regulations. Wind gusts often cause tractor-trailers to be blown into across the road in the opposite lane of travel. The result of these gusts can cause head-on accidents with cars leading to severe injury, amputations, and death.

Truck drivers have a different duty than regular drivers in cars when driving on state and federal roads. They are required to slow down and when the weather is so bad that they should not be driving, they must cease all operations and stop their tractor-trailer at the nearest safe place to stop until conditions are safe. Any wind above 40 mph is sufficient to require the truck driver to stop.

Injury & Death Due to Driving in Kansas During Storms

On December 15, 2021, hundreds of large trucks failed to obey the law in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. This single day caused over 400 accidents in one day. They killed other drivers and severely injured many. The Bull Attorneys represented several of the injured drivers that were badly hurt that day.

When bad weather conditions exist, or winds exceed 40 mph the truck drivers must stop. To protect yourself you should do all the following:

  • Find a safe place to stop until the storm is over.
  • If you cannot find a safe place to stop then reduce speed and pull onto the shoulder.
  • If you pull over, put your flashers on.
  • Remember that tractor-trailer drivers have a much higher line of sight.
  • Bad semi drivers will not stop and follow the law and will drive through storms and winds.
  • Truck drivers routinely violate federal safety rules.
  • When you see a truck driver do this you should take care to get out of their way.
  • If you can make out their truck logo and a cab or trailer number you should report them immediately.
  • When you have an accident immediately call 911 and report injuries.
  • If injured, immediately ask for EMS assistance, and go to the hospital by ambulance.
  • See an emergency room doctor at a real emergency hospital and do not go to minor urgent care clinics.
  • Photograph the scene, cars, trucks, and all the injuries.
  • Ask the truck driver why they did not stop for the storm and write down exactly what they said.
