Are crotch rockets more dangerous than cruiser motorcycles?

Can you mitigate the risks by choosing a different motorcycle and altering driving behaviors? Supersports, also called "Crotch Rockets," account for 10% of all motorcycle registrations. However, these are involved in 25% of fatal motorcycle accidents. The risks are high and motorcyclists can reduce their risk of injury or death by choosing the right motorcycle and changing their driving behavior so they don't need to contact motorcycle accident lawyers.

Fatalities involving crotch rockets and cruisers

Data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2009 showed that motorcyclists are 25 times more likely to die in an accident than occupants of passenger vehicles.

The type of motorcycle does influence accident risk. Data gathered by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that in 2000, 619 riders on Supersports died in motorcycle accidents. This was lower than the 976 fatalities recorded for riders of Cruisers.

However, that year there were 1.72 million Cruisers registered which equated to a fatality rate of 5.6 per 10,000. There were just under 274,000 Supersports registered which equated to a fatality rate of 22.6 per 10,000. This was a fatality rate that was nearly four times higher.

By 2005, fatalities for Cruisers rose to 1,583 as the number of registered motorcycles skyrocketed to 2.78 million. That same year, the number of fatalities for Supersports rose to 1,128 as the number or registrations rose to 501,000. In both cases, the fatality rates remained relatively unchanged from 2000.
