Why do so many car accidents happen in Wichita over the holidays like New Year's Eve in 2023?

So many car accidents happen on holidays and New Year's Eve every year because negligent and drunk drivers disregard the DUI laws in Kansas for the state statutes and the Wichita Municipal Ordinances and continue to drive even when drunk.

There are thousands of car accidents every year in Wichita and Kansas. In 2021 the KDOT reported that there were 90,045 car accidents and motor vehicle accidents. Wichita had 7,635 car accidents with other motor vehicles resulting in 3,636 people being injured and 52 people died.

In Sedgwick County, the 2021 year end results were worse with KDOT reporting that there were 9,465 car accidents with other vehicles and pedestrians with 4,278 injuries and 67 fatalities.

Holidays like Christmas and New Year's Eve are known for danger for car accidents. Christmas of 2021 had 308 car accidents with 4 fatalities and 80 people were injured. 26 of the crashes were alcohol related according to the KDOT. New Year's Eve was worse with 467 car accidents with other motor vehicles and pedestrian resulting in 90 injuries with 26 alcohol related crashes.

The following list of intersections are areas to be avoided this New Year's Eve while driving in Wichita. These intersections are known for higher accident rates. The intersections to avoid are:

Of course, there are many other dangerous intersection on New Year's Eve due to the negligent drivers that refuse to drive without drinking. Remember that the Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office will have DUI checkpoints all over town, especially near the perimeter of Old Town.

Some of these will be announced on New Year's Eve., however many will go up unannounced so be careful, be safe and do not drive drunk. Out of safety for you and your loved ones we recommend limiting alcohol intake and stay off the roads because many local Wichita citizens will be injured or killed in car accidents on this holiday event.
